Korean Beverage Company Pureplus Is Exporting Its Aloe Beverage Products to 70 Areas Around the World
Nicknamed “the gift of God,” aloe has been used for skincare and whitening since ancient times. There are records that Cleopatra (the last of the Ptolemies―the Macedonia-descended pharaohs who began to rule Egypt in 304 B.C.) added aloe vera to the water in her baths and used it in cosmetics to keep her skin soft. Many European and American consumers like aloe beverages because, while tasting sweet, such beverages are beneficial for the health. These days, most of the popular aloe beverages sold worldwide are produced in Korea. Pureplus is one of the Korean aloe beverage exporters whose products foreign buyers are highly interested in. The company offers unique, high-quality products based on three decades of beverage making knowhow. Recently, Pureplus has been stepping up its efforts to increase exports. Established in 1986 under the principle of “producing healthy and safe beverages,” Pureplus Co., Ltd. is actively exporting its aloe beverages to 70 areas all around the world, including to the US and the Middle East. The company first started exports through an OEM (original equipment manufacturing) agreement in the late 2000s. Pureplus recorded export sales of USD$5 million in 2010 and then started to explore foreign markets under its own brand, Pureplus, by actively participating in international food fairs. As a result, exports of Pureplus, which totaled USD$7 million in 2011, reached USD$10 million in 2012, and hit USD$21 million last year. As we can see, the company is steadily building up its brand name.
Different Types of Aloe Beverage Flavors such as Mango, Pomegranate, and Peach
The flagship of Pureplus is My Aloe. It has been able to win the hearts of many foreign consumers for several reasons. First, it is made only with fresh and good quality aloe. Second, the high proportion of the aloe gel contents lets us consume the best part of the “gift of God” to the maximum. What’s more, the beverage flatters our senses by adding the fun of chewing to the drinking sensation. What’s more, the company uses very few food preservatives and artificial additives and is constantly making efforts to secure food safety. The My Aloe product line includes a variety of beverages. Accordingly, the company can customize the exports according to the market. The long list of My Aloe products includes many fruit-flavored aloe beverages such as mango, pomegranate, blueberry, pineapple, peach, guava, strawberry, and grape. The products of the sweet aloe beverage line Yogo Aloe (which is offered in plain, mango, coconut, and strawberry flavors) are also popular with overseas consumers.
Customizing Exports According to the Market
The preferences of foreign consumers for particular products within the My Aloe line tend to vary according to the region. In the US, the largest importer of My Aloe, local consumers enjoy the original, mango, pomegranate, and pineapple flavors. Among American consumers, the products are particularly popular with Hispanic consumers. In the local market, the beverages are mainly distributed in 1.5 liter PET bottles through large supermarkets such as Costco and Ralphs. In South America and the Middle East, people like sweet tasting products, so peach and banana flavored My Aloe are getting the best response. These products are distributed there in 240ml cans. My Aloe original version receives a lot of love in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and other countries of Europe.
My Aloe beverages are also actively exported to Eastern Europe―Poland, Romania, and Russia. The sales of sugar-free My Aloe beverages continue to increase as interest in a healthy lifestyle is rising around the world.
FDA On-the-Spot Inspections of Pureplus Beverage Production Line Gave It a Passing Mark
Located in Hamyang County (of South Gyeongsang Province), three Pureplus production complexes make aloe beverages in different types of packaging―from PET bottles (500ml and 1.5 liter) to cans and glass bottles. One new beverage factory will be built in June and a second will follow later this year, so the production scale is expected to increase even further.
All the production facilities are kept in highly sanitary conditions as proven by ISO 14000. Pureplus is also going to introduce HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) to the new beverage factory that will be constructed in June. US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) inspectors visited a production complex of Pureplus last August to check the sanitary conditions and confirmed that the factory meets the standards for sanitation and safety.
Non-alcoholic Cocktails and Organic Juices of Pureplus
Other beverage products of Pureplus are also attracting a lot of attention from foreign buyers. These include non-alcoholic cocktails (Mojito and Pinacola-da; 340ml PET) and Pure Nature Organic Juices (made with organically grown fruit). Non-alcoholic cocktail beverages are suitable for women and younger consumers who do not like alcoholic drinks. Nowadays, the demand for such beverages is steadily increasing in the Middle East where alcohol is prohibited. Pure Nature Organic Juices target the worldwide premium beverage market. The products include six different types of juices such as tomato, orange and grape. Thanks to the packaging in glass bottles (210ml, 245ml, and 1liter), they have a classy image and are therefore good as a gift. Pure Nature Organic Juice beverages are exported to Taiwan, Thailand, and several other Asian countries.
